The monthly payment isn't the full cost of owning a car. Maintenance is coming and as the miles add up, those expenses can get much bigger than many vehicle owners expect.
Dave Riccio and Jon Riggle break down what you should realistically budget for car maintenance from a new vehicle through 90,000 miles. They cover oil changes, tires, brakes, transmission service, fluids, unexpected repairs, and why the 6-7 year mark can become an expensive point in a vehicle's life.

Subaru TR580 & TR690 CVT Valve Body Replacement (Saved $10,000)
In this episode of the Bumper to Bumper Podcast, Dave Riccio from Tri-City Transmission walks through a real-world repair on a 2015 Subaru Forester that was quoted $12,000 for a transmission replacement. After a thorough diagnostic process, we identified the root cause: a failed pressure-control solenoid within the TR580 CVT valve body.
Instead of replacing the entire transmission, we replaced only the valve body, saving the customer thousands of dollars. We estimate that 2 out of 3 Subaru transmissions are replaced in error.
Tri-City Transmission technician Santiago takes you through the complete process of replacing the valve body and changing the fluid in the transmission.
This repair is a pattern repair on most late-model Subarus with a CVT transmission. The only difference. Some have the valve body mounted on top of the transmission, and others on the bottom.
Transmission Model Numbers for Subaru -
TR580 is top-mounted - The valve body is accessed through the top cover
TR690 is bottom-mounted - The valve body is accessed through the bottom pan
This is a pattern failure. It is not always related to the same solenoid, but we see failed solenoids that turn on all the dash lights, like a Christmas tree. Subaru does not sell the solenoids separately, so unfortunately, you have to replace the entire valve body. Although we are trying to find other sources to save the customer even more money.
Want to hear what the customer thought after saving over $10,000?

Avoid a $15,000 Mistake! 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk Wonโt Move? Watch This First
In this episode, we break down a real-world diagnostic on a 2018 Jeep Trailhawk (2.4L, 9-speed transmission) that was nearly misdiagnosed with a $15,000 transmission replacement ๐ณ
The vehicle came in with major issues:
- Barely moving at stoplights
- Stalling after startup
- No crank condition at times
- Previous dealership diagnosis pointing toward a transmission failure
But hereโs the twistโฆ the transmission wasnโt the problem at all.
We walk through the full diagnostic process step-by-step:
- Fuel vs spark testing
- Oil pressure checks
Inspecting fouled spark plugs
- Identifying a failed electronic throttle body
- How a bad battery can affect transmission performance
The actual fix? About $1,300 instead of $15,000.
This is a perfect example of why proper diagnostics matter and how small issues can mimic major transmission failures.
Key takeaway: Donโt replace major components until you KNOW the root cause.
Topics Covered:
- Jeep Trailhawk transmission issues
- Throttle body failure symptoms
- Misdiagnosed transmission problems
- Automotive diagnostics explained
- Battery voltage and transmission behavior

Metal In Transmission Fluid? Don't Replace It Until You Watch This.
In this episode of the Bumper to Bumper Podcast, hosts Dave Riccio and Jon Riggle break down one of the most common (and expensive) misdiagnoses in the auto repair world. If youโve ever been told your transmission is failing because of โmetal in the fluidโ or โburnt fluid,โ this episode could save you thousands of dollars.
We explain why metal in transmission fluid is often completely normal, how to tell the difference between minor wear and serious damage, and why fluid color alone doesnโt mean your transmission is bad. Youโll also learn how some shops jump straight to replacement when the real fix could be something much simpler and far cheaper.
Whether you're dealing with shifting issues, confusing mechanic advice, or just want to understand your car better, this episode gives you the knowledge to avoid costly mistakes.
What Youโll Learn:
Why metal in transmission fluid is usually normal
The difference between โburnt,โ โvarnished,โ and discolored fluid
Common transmission misdiagnoses that cost drivers thousands
When a transmission actually needs replacement vs. repair
How experience (and proper inspection) makes all the difference

In this episode, we break down a real diagnostic case where a customer thought their transmission was going out, but the actual issue turned out to be a simple engine misfire caused by a faulty spark plug.
This kind of misdiagnosis happens more often than youโd think. Drivers experience rough shifting, loss of power, or hesitation under load and immediately assume the worst: a blown transmission. But as we explain in this episode, the transmission relies heavily on proper engine performance, and when the engine isnโt running right, it can mimic major transmission problems.
We walk you through:
* How a misfire can feel like a transmission issue
* Why your car struggles under load (like driving uphill)
* The diagnostic process mechanics use to find the real problem
* How a simple fix can save you thousands of dollars
* Why do so many people misdiagnose their own vehicles
In this case, instead of a $5,000 to $12,000 transmission replacement, the customer left with a basic tune-up. Saving serious money and avoiding unnecessary repairs.
If youโve ever felt your car shift weird, hesitate, or lose power, this is a must-watch before assuming the worst.
